Firefighter, Emergency Services
Started in emergency services as a firefighter, building real-world risk awareness and calm under pressure.
Right of Way Driving School is a Chilliwack-based driving school licensed under the Motor Vehicle Act of British Columbia (DTC# 2918). Founded and led by Sergey Yablonovsky, the school delivers calm, structured one-on-one driving instruction, real-world coaching on Chilliwack roads, and a safety-first experience from the first pickup to test day.
Sergey, the founder and lead instructor of Right of Way Driving School, brings a unique background in emergency services, professional driving, driver training, and real-world road safety.
Born in Eastern Europe, Sergey began his career in emergency services as a firefighter. He then trained and worked as a fire-truck driver. Later, he became an instructor for fire-truck and special-service vehicle drivers, teaching emergency personnel how to operate large vehicles safely, confidently, and professionally.
After moving to Canada, Sergey continued working in safety-focused roles. He became a First Aid Medic and Emergency Response Vehicle driver and worked on industrial projects across British Columbia, operating a fully equipped first-aid response vehicle on remote and large-scale worksites, including projects connected to BC Hydro. This experience gave him a deep understanding of responsibility, risk awareness, calm decision-making, and safety in real-world conditions.
Eventually, Sergey returned to what he had always enjoyed most: teaching driving. After becoming a licensed driving instructor in British Columbia, he founded Right of Way Driving School in Chilliwack. Today, the school helps Class 7 and Class 5 students build the skills, confidence, and judgment they need not only to pass the ICBC road test, but to become safer, more independent drivers for life.
His teaching style is calm, practical, and focused on real driving situations. With a background in emergency driving, professional instruction, and on-the-ground safety, Sergey brings a level of experience that goes far beyond standard driving lessons.

Every lesson is taught in a 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid equipped with dual steering wheels, instructor-side gas and brake, a head-up display, and surround-view cameras. It is a safer, more controlled learning environment, especially helpful for new drivers, anxious students, and anyone preparing for a high-stakes road test. Most other schools have only a brake pedal on the instructor side. Right of Way's dual steering and instructor-side gas means the instructor can smoothly take over the maneuver instead of simply stopping the car.
Lessons are built around progress, not wasted time. Students can expect a clear objective for each session, focused driving practice, honest feedback, and a plan for what to improve next. Whether you are starting from zero, rebuilding confidence after a failed test, or sharpening up before a Class 5 exam, the goal is the same: make you safer, calmer, and more capable on the road.
